The Townies and Mixers 1973

by Bettie Bass

The Saturday night, after moving in, we sat on the brick wall at the Cunninghams so that the town boys could see us. They would drive through several times whistling, yelling, some even getting out of their cars. Of course, our head mother told us not to associate with the “townies”. The Longwood Mixers were a lot of fun. (This was a dance with music and 3.2 beer.) Sometimes they were held in the ballroom at Lankford, sometimes in the lower dining hall. They were always crowded and a lot of fun. Since my good friend was a waitress in the dining hall, she and I were allowed in the back area of the dining hall where they kept the beer kegs. Tal Yeatts, with Aramark, always made sure we had fresh beer!
